Look for the USDA seal on the label for
True USDA Certified Organic Products

The USDA is now certifying organic skin care products and allowing their organic logo to be used. Products that contain this logo will have to meet strict standards, the same standards that organic agriculture must meet.

Currently certification by the USDA as applied to foods and now to personal care products that meet the NOP (USDA's National Organic Program) standards includes the following:
Ingredients that are free from synthetic chemicals: fertilizers, pesticides, antibiotics or food additives or genetically modified organisms.
Ingredients grown on farmland that has been free from chemicals for at least three years.
Periodic checks of production and sales records.
Maintaining strict physical separation of certified organic products.
Inspection of facilities where organic products are made.

The Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) and the National Organic Program (NOP) assure consumers that the organic agricultural products they purchase are produced, processed, and certified to consistent national organic standards. The labelling requirements of the NOP apply to raw, fresh products and processed products that contain organic agricultural ingredients. Agricultural products that are sold, labelled, or represented as organic must be produced and processed in accordance with the NOP standards.
100% Organic—Foods bearing this label are made with 100% organic ingredients* and may display the USDA Organic seal.
Organic—These products contain at least 95–99% organic ingredients (by weight). The remaining ingredients are not available organically but have been approved by the NOP. These products may display the USDA Organic seal.

Made with Organic Ingredients—Food packaging that reads "Made With Organic Ingredients" must contain 70–94% organic ingredients. These products will not bear the USDA Organic seal; instead, they may list up to three ingredients on the front of the packaging.
Other—Products with less than 70% organic ingredients may only list organic ingredients on the information panel of the packaging. These products will not bear the USDA Organic seal.
*Salt and water are not included.

Pro-Cert certifies some 1,700 organic producers, processors, handlers and traders in Canada and the US. Pro-Cert's certification scope grew from certification to its own standard to certification via appropriate accreditation to:

2. the EC Regulation 834/07 and 889/08;
3. the USDA National Organic Program;
4. The Quebec Organic Reference Standards;

		Consumer Beware:
		A few facts to watch out when considering organic products... Not all is organic: Pay attention to Manufactures advertising USDA Organic seals. It does not necessarily mean that all their products are USDA Organic. Often the case is that only a few products are true USDA certified organic, the remainder are not. So observe what is offered. The 'Seal' is the deal: USDA certification is not an easy process to accomplish. Manufacturers achieving certification are privileged to display the USDA seal on each of their products. If the product does not have a USDA Certified Organic seal on the label…It cannot be called USDA Certified Organic. Look for the USDA seal on the label for all products claiming to be organic. The 'O' word: The word 'Organic' is frequently used very loosely by many Manufacturers. Often the truth is, that products partially contain organic ingredients, this does not necessarily earn them the title organic. The USDA association has put in place strict restrictions on qualifying organic products. So question the legitimacy of the organic claims on products. More than a 'filling': Beware of products that contain a high percentage water base, fillers and persevatives. Water is the perfect medium for mold growth. Many manufactures offer organic ingredients and then add toxic chemicals to preserve the water in the formulae. Fillers in products mean that there less of the active ingredients. Look out for these characteristic. Looks can be deceiving: Seals or logos appearing on labels can look similar. Read them carefully! Often the look is perceived differently than what it describes. Fraud alert: The Organic Consumers Association and a select group of organic personal care brands filed an official complaint with the USDA against manufactures that have been falsely promoting beauty and grooming products as organic.
